Surf Lesson - How important are they?

How important is it to have a Surf Lesson? I could get meladramatic and say that they are more important than breathing or your first born but seriously.

All I have to say is that you dont have to get a surf lesson and still be a successful surfer IF your prepared to spend ten times as much time out in the water trying to figure it all out.

In life you can trade two things usually, time and money. If you dont have the money then spend all your time trying to figure something out and work your butt off at it. If you have the money then you can accelerate your learning and start achieving results fast.

And i'm not really talking about an amount of money to buy a small nation either. We're talking anywhere between $15- $30 for a two hour lesson. Thats pretty good value in my books.

I struggled to pick up surfing upon taking really bad advice from a so called friend. He said that he had a 8ft longboard surfboard that he could sell me cheap and I agreed. He then turned up the next day with a 6ft 9in fibreglass shortboard and said the other way damaged but this would do and I would have no time in learning to surf on this board... If I saw him today I would punch him in the nose.

I struggled so hard for so many hours with that shortboard, and no shortage of injuries, that my wife took pity on me and bought me a surf lesson. I was too tight with money to actually pay for a lesson myself, not that I couldnt afford it either, but my wife was sick of hearing me complain about how it was impossible and I couldnt do it.

Honestly speaking here, after maybe 10 hours of trying to stand up on my own it took me no more than five minutes in the water during my first surf lesson, after we did some beach theory, to stand up. The feeling was overwhelmingly amazing. I'll never forget it.

Now ask me that question again, how important is a surf lesson?

PS: So the moral of this story goes like this. If at first you dont succeed, get your wife to buy you a surf lesson.
